Known as ‘Pudina’ in hindi, mint leaf, fresh or dried, is the culinary source of mint. Fresh mint is usually preferred over dried mint when storage of the mint is not a problem. The leaves have a pleasant warm, fresh, aromatic, sweet flavor with a cool aftertaste. Mint leaves are used in teas, beverages, jellies, syrups, candies, and ice creams.

Look for mint leaves that have firm, unwilted leaves, are vividly deep green in color with no signs of yellowing or browning. Leaves that are smaller in size will be more tender and have a milder flavour

Mint is especially rich in carotenes and vitamin C which is beneficial in certain conditions such as eye health and cardiovascular disease. Mint provides 1620 micrograms of carotenes. Mint is also a good source of several essential minerals, including magnesium, copper, iron, potassium, and calcium.

·         Mint leaves are considered an aid to the digestive system. It is an appetite stimulant and aids in the secretion of gastric juices. 

·         Mint was originally used as a medicinal herb to treat stomach ache and chest pains, and it is commonly used in the form of tea as a home remedy to help alleviate stomach pain.

·         Mint tea is a strong diuretic.

·         Mint also aids digestion, in a way that it breaks down the fats. In recent years, it has been often recommended for treating obesity.

·         The presence of menthol helps to treat sore throats and colds, being an effective expectorant that removes mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract.

·         Mint is also widely-regarded in oral care, where the presence of tannins help keep odor-causing bacteria out of the oral cavity, preventing the formation of cavities. During the Middle Ages, powdered mint leaves were used to whiten teeth. 

·         The presence of menthol helps to treat sore throats and colds, being an effective expectorant that removes mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract.

·         Mint also contains antioxidants that help fight the signs of aging, whether it be staving off diseases such as cancer or keeping your skin looking youthful.

Fresh mint leaves should be used immediately or stored up to a couple of days in plastic bags within a refrigerator.

Dried mint leaves should be stored in an airtight container placed in a cool, dark, dry place.
