also called as “Dhaniya patti” in hindi, is a flattened aromatic green leave with a characteristic smell used to flavour and garnish food.

Fresh coriander (or cilantro) leaves should look vibrantly fresh and be deep green in color. They should be firm, crisp and free from yellow or brown spots.

Coriander leaves are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K and protein. They also contain small amounts of calcium, phosphorous, potassium, thiamin, niacin and carotene.

·         Coriander lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the levels of good cholesterol (HDL).

·         A very good food for digestive system, coriander promotes liver functions and bowel movements.Coriander is good for diabetes patients.

·         It can stimulate the insulin secretion and lower the blood sugar levels.

·         Vitamin K in it is good for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

·         The fat soluble vitamin and antioxidant- Vitamin A, protects from lung and cavity cancers.Coriander contains anti-inflammatory properties. This is why it is good against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

·         Coriander's anti-septic properties help to cure mouth ulcer. Coriander is good for the eyes. Antioxidants in coriander prevent eye diseases. It's a good remedy in the treatment of conjunctivitis.

·         Coriander seeds are especially good for the menstrual flow.

·         It's a very good herb to promote the nervous system.

·          It can stimulate the memory. Coriander helps those suffering from anaemia. Coriander contains high amounts of iron, which is essential for curing anemia.

·         Coriander helps cure ulcers, inflammation, spasms, while acting as an expectorant and protecting the liver.

·         It is anticarcinogenic, anticonvulsant, antihistaminic and hypnotic.

·         Coriander is believed to be a natural aphrodisiac and traditionally, it was widely used in certain combinations with other herbs to enhance a person’s libido.

Since it is highly perishable, fresh coriander should always be stored in the refrigerator.

              If possible, it should stored with its roots still attached by placing the roots in a glass of water and covering the leaves with a loosely fitting plastic bag.

                                  If the roots have been removed, wrap the coriander leaves in a damp cloth or paper towel and place them in a plastic bag.

                         Before you store coriander it should be rinsed and left moist (not wet) and place in a plastic bag. The coriander may be stored for up to 1 week. The most easy and convenient way of storing coriander leaves is pluck the leaves and tender stems and store them in an airtight container.
